  5.     The first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, a.k.a. the
  6. Bill of Rights, are the nation's most basic guarantees of
  7. individual liberty. Over the past two centuries, however, five
  8. of the original 13 states have managed to lose the handwritten
  9. copies of the Bill of Rights sent to each of them for
  10. ratification.

  12.     What ever happened to the precious parchments? Georgia
  13. simply can't find its copy. North Carolina thinks a Yankee yegg
  14. grabbed its historic document during the Civil War when General
  15. William Tecumseh Sherman tramped through Raleigh. And some New
  16. Yorkers speculate that Governor George Clinton walked off with
  17. the state's manuscript when he left the statehouse in 1804.

  19.     Probably the most embarrassed over the missing text is
  20. Pennsylvania, which will be host of the bicentennial
  21. celebration of the charter's ratification in Philadelphia next
  22. year. "We have no idea what happened to our copy," says the
  23. state's head archivist, Harry Whipkey. Next-door Delaware can't
  24. provide a copy either; like Maryland, Delaware returned its
  25. version to the Federal Government after the Bill of Rights'
  26. ratification. So Philadelphia officials are now contemplating
  27. crossing the Delaware to see if they can borrow New Jersey's
  28. original for the festivities.
